Dwarf fortress barracks12/27/2022 ![]() ![]() I think the amount of interlocking features that these goals require necessarily lead to an overwhelmed AI and hard to impossible to balance gameplay in multiplayer. ![]() Many systems in Stellaris seem to be designed to provide an immersive experience and recreate many sci-fi tropes and storylines. I think a lot of the rage in the forums about bad AI or imbalanced stuff is a direct result of this conflict. What I noticed recently however is that Paradox Games seem to be in a very awkward middle ground between these design paradigms and Stellaris seems like the worst case of that to me. I think games fulfill at least these 3 different desires (Simulating, Immersion, Optimization) and different people have different needs of what they want in their games. I think this is in general a good design decision as Immersion and Simulation Accuracy can stand in the way of providing meaningful choices for a competitive and skilltesting game and vice versa. I feel that most games that are made with these intentions in mind are generally not designed to be played in a competitive way and also vice versa for competitive games like LoL or Counter Strike. Things like optimizing the way I play or getting really skillful at winning are mostly uninteresting to me and I mostly choose the games I play based on these criteria. There, Oakenshield is a nickname belonging to Thorin Oakenshield, a dwarvish king. When I play video games I am mostly interested in either deep simulators of complex systems (Dwarf Fortress for example) or in Roleplaying in the environment provided to me by the game (Be it Single player games with a focus on story or more open "Roleplaying Simulators" like CK2 for example). The achievement Oakenshield is a reference to Tolkien's book, The Hobbit.Tolkien himself got the names from a list of dwarf names in the Völuspá, an epic Norse poem from the Poetic Edda. While in combat, soldiers & reinforcements regenerate 1% of health every second.Except for maybe holding back a few stragglers in Darklight Depths, they are almost absolutely worthless while there are any Saurian Deathcoils within firing range.Instead, their base damage can be doubled with all three Mithril Hammers. These dwarfs are similar to the Holy Order from the previous game: both can heal themselves and can upgrade their armor, but without Holy Strike.Standard range without upgrades Strategy ![]()
